Best Movies 2008

Firstly, a happy, fun-filled and sunny new year to all of you!

Declared as the year of the frog, 2008 has personally been a year of leaps in my life. It has also been a year where cinema has reigned supreme in my list of time-pass activities.  I have watched some fantastic movies and here is a short review of my favourite movies for the year:

The B.E.S.T movie ever. I watched it thrice and some scenes more times than I can remember, rolling on the floor laughing my guts out. A witty, funny and well-made classic with cult characters.

Rajat Kapoor dishes a quirky version of the traditional gangster Switcheroo. A cast filled with the usual suspects, Ranvir Shorey is popular as the hapless protagonist. One of the best endings in movies.

Talented Ellen Page as Juno is fantastic. A well-made, feel-good movie that earned Page a well-deserved Oscar nomination. A pretty realistic insight into the mind of an unconventional teenager.

Kurosawa's famous movie is a war movie that pitches seven "retired" samurai against a barbarian horde in ancient Japan. A good cinematic experience once you get used to the funny running mannerisms of the Japanese.

At last, a Scorsese movie that I liked. Classic performances, gripping movie and an interesting side-take on the effects of being a gangster. Leonardo Di Caprio has tremendously matured in the last couple of yeras - Blood Diamond and Departed.

Great action. Great Effects. Great Direction. Great Heath Ledger. A complete, thrilling action movie for our times. It is easily one of the best action movies I've seen in some time. The Dark Knight also takes the Batman up a genre by introducing difficult questions on morality and nature of goodness. The director Christopher Nolan delivers again after Prestige, Batman Begins and Memento.

It's Javier Bardem's movie all the way. In a terrific, unblinking performance, Bardem stars in this drug-deal-gone-wrong movie. As any other Coen Brothers movie, it depicts only a slice of the events that took place, with no beginning or end. A must-watch.

Animated Comedy reaches new heights with this terrific movie about a kung-fu loving panda, voiced by made-for-it Jack Black. The jokes are witty, the expressions get even more realistic and all the characters are funny. A delightful movie and one of the funniest of the year.

An another likeable eccentric movie from the Coen Brothers' stable. Full of goof-ups, misunderstandings and a large amount of what the directors call "idiocy". It also casts actors like Clooney and Brad Pitt in roles you would least expect them to see in. Foul-mouthed Malkovich and Frances McDormand take the cake though in this tight movie, laced with many scenes that leave you stunned.

The most intelligent Hindi movie I've ever seen. Dibakar Banerjee dishes out a dark yet delightful movie about a small-time thief who graduates to a most-wanted conman. I loved the earthy and accurately depicted vignettes of life in Delhi. Abhay Deol plays the lead to a tee as the confident thief whose frequent answer to anything asked of him "Why? Can

It's a pity that these movies never garner the attention they should.
